It Just Takes One to Make a Difference
Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko, we help kids build better lives for themselves and a better community for Elko. We are among the nearly 4,000 Club locations in the country and on U.S. military installations throughout the world. With your investment, we can reach out to more young people and keep them learning and growing in the Club through the most critical years of their de-velopment. You believe in our children, and so do we. They can’t afford to wait another day. Join us! Let’s make sure all children have a chance at a great future. WILL YOU BE THE ONE? ELKO—The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko kicked off its annual “It Just Takes One” campaign earlier this month. This individual giving campaign will raise funds for the after-school programs and services for area youth, ages 6-18. Scheduled to run through January 20, the campaign seeks donations primarily from individuals and smaller businesses. This campaign differs from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko Capital Campaign which is restricted to building costs for the new Club facility. Serving as the campaign’s chair is Debbie Bristol, a Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko board member. The campaign’s goal is to raise funds for the Clubs’ annual operating budget. “It Just Take One” focuses on the power of the individual to make a difference in the life of a child through the committed financial support of many individuals. Bristol said, “We are proud to announce that we have already received some early lead gifts from board members, staff and parents. All we need now is the rest of our community to show their support, and we will be able to reach, or maybe even exceed, our goal. Our long-term goal is to find 500 people to contribute at least $500 annually, but we want people to know that we appreciate gift of any amount.” “Our Club is making a difference in the community,” said Bristol. “Last year, our local Club served 2,071 youth, about one-third of the school age children in Elko and Spring Creek. But there are still many more children in our community who need the kind of positive influence and guidance the Club provides, and we want to reach out to these youth and their families.” Dave Sedano, a Wal-Mart employee, said the Club has really helped his family. Sedano, who moved to the area about seven months ago, has two children attending the Club. He said, “When we moved here we were really lost. My fiancé and I came from California and we both had to work and we really needed a place for our kids to go after school. We visited the Club and talked to them about our needs and it was great. There is a huge sense of security in knowing the kids are in a safe place and that the staff is good role models.” “Children are a product of how you raise them, but you can’t be there all the time. The Club provides a positive environment where they are learning. You can’t beat the price either! It helps the parents, the community, but most of all it helps the kids,” said Sedano. Funds raised during the “It takes One” campaign will provide the necessary money for summer programs and provide quality after school programs such as the Power Hour homework help program, computer skills training, career exploration, arts and crafts, fitness and sports, and character and leadership programs such as SMART Moves (a substance abuse prevention program) and Youth of the Year (the Club’s premier recognition program). The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. “The cost of Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko membership for each child for a year is $15, but it cost $1,660 a day to provide programming which is why we need the support of the individuals in the community” said Bristol. Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko, founded in 1997, is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization and depends on grant funding as well as individual and corporate donations to accomplish its mission.
